Jim, 

Actually the Multivibrator can be used as a sort of spark gap only when 
discharging low current capacitors. Otherwise they are just a means by which to
trigger the other switching elements.  Especially for thyratrons and trigatrons,
but not soley.  Well atleast that is what Frungel says in Volume 1, I don't
really know for sure, not my specialty, so to speak.
