Fred:

     Original voltage = V
     Original energy = E1= 1/2[CV^2]
     Final energy = E2 = 1/2[C(V/2)^2] + 1/2[C(V/2)^2] = 1/2[CV^2/2]
     E2 = 1/2 E1

    CHARGE (CV) is conserved, ENERGY (1/2CV^2) is not!
