I have been reading this list for quite a while now, and am getting
 ready
to start building a new coil. My first (and probably biggest) question
 so
far is what shape of primary should I use as a beginning? Also, I saw
 in
one magazine (Popular Electronics?) while I was still in High School,
 that
one made a TC with a square primary, flat rolled. Would this work
 better
or worse than a round flat and/or cylindrical wound coil?

LT,

Based on my experience, and recent testing posted here, I would suggest
a 14
turn primary made with 1/4" copper tubing with 1/4" spacing. This would
be
for a small to medium coil up to say 1500 watts input. I would also
incline
the primary about 10 to 15 degrees which raises up the outside few turns
to
make tuning easier and increases coupling without getting the outside
turns
too close to the top of the secondary.
