If a high voltage diode is placed in series with L1, such that it
conducts "normally" (anode toward the DC source when latter is +),
C2 will charge to twice the supply voltage after each discharge
of the gap and "wait" until the next gap closure.  Works as long
as the period of the gap closing is longer than the period of 
oscillation of L1-C2.  Standard circuit for radar modulators since
pre-WW2 days.  Many of these modulators used a rotary gap.
