Formvar is still made.  It is used for oil-filled applications only, so
it is tough to get in small quantities direct from the supplier (I just
tried :-).

I bought a 10 pound spool of #22, insulated with polyurethane, then
overcoated with nylon (trade name is Nyleze).  It cost about $40 from
EIS (800)-377-4999.  I have not fired the coil yet - still building -
but I expect it to work fine.
