Sounds to me like you haven't got the Primary resonating with the
secondary. Start clipping your tap outward from about the 3rd coil turn
by turn and test each time with the grounded wire. If the spark is still
getting larger at the 8th turn then maybe you need more turns.

Also I would watch the wood mounting on your sparkgap. It maybe
conducting away some of your spark. Plexiglass would be better.
