A comprehensive Tesla coil survey is a great idea and the members of the
Tesla List will be able to use this data to assist in design, construction,
and trouble-shooting of Tesla oscillators. Taking this information,
forming a database, and presenting it to the general public might present
some problems down the road. Example, a young coil builder uses your
information from the database to construct a coil and somehow gets ahold of
a pole transformer to power the unit. He gets fried. His parents get paid
by their insurance company for the "loss". Now, guess who the insurance
company sues for a cool million $$$ or more?

Don't misunderstand -- I do applaud your efforts but you would be wise to
consider the strange situations you might encounter if you attempt to
promote the data in any way -- this makes you legally responsible for any
problems as you are the person who brought the data into the public format.
It makes no difference if you are a company or an individual -- the law
allows insurance companies to sue even across international boundaries.
It's probably not fair but it's how the system works and unfortunately many
individuals have learned this lesson the very hard way.

Our company designs and builds commercial units especially for science
museum applications. While we do attempt to help individuals with advice
on the construction of small oscillators we have had a few meetings with
our attorneys who have painted a rather gloomy picture of what could happen
if we start compiling or publishing our data. The small form we circulate
on "Tesla Oscillator Design" only discusses small neon operated units and
then contains disclaimers. Our attorneys have also advised that while
disclaimers are essential they may also be useless in some states.

I think you ideas represent great goodwill and will help many young coil
builders but would strongly advise against distributing or compiling any
data that uses more than a 60 ma. source of power. It could come back to
haunt you.
