Just a thought on how to make the basic shape - how about inflating a
balloon with a can of polyurathane filler foam, and squashing it
top-to-bottom until the foam sets to get the shape. You'd probably
need to put some water in first to get the foam to set, and
under-inflate as the foam swells up.
