Jim,
    I used a short length of 3 inch pvc pipe affixed to an inverted floor
drain for my first coil.  It is about 16 inches tall.  It seems to be very
stable and was fairly cheap.  A good toroid for this size of coil can be made
from a two inch aluminum duct hose from an auto parts store.
