Subject: Eagle Lite Freeware

This is a post from Fr. Tom McGahee.

It is ON TOPIC in the sense that all of us have need of some
decent way of communication schematic information from time to
time.

I am not in any way associated with the company CADSOFT, other than
being a user of their products. I am providing the following
information in the hope that some of you might want to avail
yourself of this FREE limited edition Eagle Lite package so that
we might all then have a common means for communicating simple
schematic information.

I applaud CADSOFT's generous offer in making this limited edition
freely available to hobbiests. It will give us a useful tool
for sharing information.

May I suggest that we:

A) Thank CADSOFT by sending them an e-mail if we decide to download
their product.

B) Use it when appropriate to communicate schematics to one another.

C) Spread the word.

I think that such a free package would be useful
in many contexts. If you have a web page, you might want to set
a link to CADSOFT's site. It is advantageous to us all if we have a
common 'language' for sharing schematics and like information.

P.S. I have attached a simple sample schematic file I created called
ABSOLUTE.SCH to this post. It is a 6K file that is the schematic for
a circuit that converts a voltage into its absolute value. You
can use this sample schematic to help you evaluate the package.

Hope this helps.

***** The Blurb! by Fr. Tom

Disgusted with Stupid ASCII diagrams of simple electronic circuits?
Wish you had a FREE way of exchanging simple schematic drawings
with other people on the 'net?

Try the Eagle Lite package. The limited version starts as freeware, and is
upgradeable. Runs fine under DOS, Windows, and OS/2. Available for download at
:

I have copied below the text that you will find at their website so that
you can determine whether or not you might be interested. Note that while
the Freeware version is limited in what it can create, it is *not* limited
in what it can load, view, or print!

***** The Details Taken Verbatim From CADSOFT The Web Site *****

Freeware

The EAGLE 3.5 Light Edition can be used for free!

Limitations

The following limitations apply to the EAGLE Light Edition in general:

.The useable board area is limited to 100 x 80 mm (4 x 3.2 inches).
.Only two signal layers can be used (Top and Bottom).
.The schematic editor can only create one sheet.

Apart from these three limitiations the EAGLE Light Edition can do anything
the Professional Edition can do. You can even load, view and print drawings
that exceed these limits!

The Freeware version of EAGLE Light adds these limitations:

.Support is only available via email or through our forum
	(no fax or phone support).
.Use is limited to non-profit applications or evaluation purposes.

What does "non-profit" mean?

The definition of non-profit is fairly simple and straightforward:

.If you earn money by using the Freeware version of EAGLE Light,
you have to register it.

This allows anybody who wishes to use EAGLE Light for their private hobby
projects to do so. Also students can use this version for any educational
projects. It is even ok to use this version in a commercial environment,
as long as you just want to evaluate the program. As soon as you start using
it for commercial projects, you will have to register it.

How do I get it?

Follow these steps to install the free EAGLE Light Edition on your system:

.Go to the Download area and get the file that contains the EAGLE
program installation data for your language (English or German) and
your operating system (DOS, OS/2 or Windows).
.Get the file named license.key from that same download area.
.Run the executable file you have downloaded
(preferably from a temporary directory). Depending on your operating system,
this file will either immediately do the installation, or will extract
itself into several installation files. In the latter case, run the file
named install.
.When asked for the location of the license.key file, enter the path
to the file you have downloaded.
.The ten letter Installation Code for this Freeware license is contained
in the file license.key.

Is it really useful?

Maybe you think the limitations of EAGLE Light won't allow you to do anything
meaningful? Well, take a look at the 68HC12 board, which does not exceed the
capabilities of EAGLE Light (in fact you can do even bigger boards than the
one shown there).

How can I register/upgrade?

If your application exceeds the non-profit domain, or if you prefer to have
a printed manual, CD-ROM and full support via phone or fax, you can register
your program copy and receive your own, personalized license file. Any files
you have created with the Freeware version of EAGLE Light can be used with any
registered version of EAGLE Light, Standard or Professional. So if your project

exceeds the limits of EAGLE Light, you can always go to a higher level (and you

only have to pay the difference between what you have and what you are
upgrading to).

You can register your program copy for US$ 49.-/DM 98.- (ask your local
dealer for prices in your local currency). Registered users receive their
own personalized license, a printed manual, CD-ROM, full phone and fax
support, and may use EAGLE Light for commercial projects.

What about the Demo version?

The demo version which we have been offering so far
(and which is still available) allows you to handle boards and schematics
without the aforementioned limitations. So if you want to see how EAGLE
can handle large boards, you can use the demo version to do so. However,
the demo version cannot save files and is unable to run User Language Programs.

If you already have the EAGLE CD-ROM you can install the program from there
and use the license.key file from the Download area to activate the
Freeware version of EAGLE Light.

Copyright

The Freeware version of EAGLE Light is copyright protected software,

No part of the executable files that come with EAGLE nor the license.key file
that implements the Freeware license may be altered in any way.
