I have accidentally wound chokes that ended up resonating at my Tesla 
coil's tank frequency, and the chokes got so hot that the insulation melted 
off the wire.  You first need to calculate the inductance of your old coils, 
then wind new ones with a different (larger) value, and I think this will 
probably solve your problem.
