My research indicates that the problem occurs when the main gap first 
fires. The problem is that you are trapping an energy source (chokes, 
long leads etc.) between the main gap and the transformer terminals. 
The cure: put the transformer right up to the main gap. There is no 
way the main gap cannot fire if its breakdown voltage is exceeded and 
if there are no other impedances between it and the transformer 
terminals, it effectively becomes the system safety gap as well. 
Leave the chokes out.
