What sort of gear do you want to make?
It sort of depends on the level of precision and accuracy, and how much
time you want to spend on it. Calibration can also be a bit of a pain.
"High Voltage Laboratory Technique" by Craggs and Meek is a good starting
place, but unfortunately out of print (try library).
