In a word, Don't do it!  You are just asking for disappointment.  Not only
will you have to carefully control the thickness of your varnish, but you
will have to ensure there will be ZERO defects (e.g. thin areas or
pinholes) and ZERO cracks develop later.       If either of these happen,
kiss your cap goodbye! And I believe you will spend as much on varnish to
get the proper coatings as you will for some poly sheeting or bags.
