Tried spot welding with a standard Miller A/C Spot Welder.  No good. It
seemed to immediately form an oxide and loose conductivity.  May need
shielding gas and/or special tips. I'll ask next time I'm at the welding
store...

And, probably, some exotic flux and special aluminum solder to be able
to solder to aluminum in the first place. 

What about spot welding? Seems like it would be almost the optimum
scheme.
