Hi Sam...

if you plan to build a capacitor then you may go ahead and do the
previous setup of the secondary and primary... altho if you buy a
manufactured cap build the coil around the cap

what i found easiest to do was to get all the needed materials together
first like the transformer the tubing ( for primary coil ) the wire for
the sec and a form for the sec.

1. know the power of the transformer
2. decide on what Hz you want to run at ( 180KHz is a good starting
point)
3. build the secondary to the Hz you chose
4. build/buy cap for a range of .025 - .007 mF ( hi power - lo power )
5. adjust primary to tune

the break rate has nothing to do with the Hz of the coil, the Hz of the
coil is determined by the resonance of the secondary its like tapping a
bell you hit the bell once per second ( the break rate ) but it makes
a sound at say 15KHz ( the resonance)

you are pretty close to being right on the resistance part here ... the
best thing to do is to use another transformer that pulls 8 amps with
the secondary shorted out. I went to radio shack and purchased a
120V/12V transformer that drew 5 amps off of house current and i wired
that transformer in series on one leg of the supply to the HV
transformer worked like a charm :) altho you dont have the ability to
vary the current you are " limited" to that one level..
Variacs are good to have for this situation altho they are hard to find
cheap.
