Re: Custom Neon Xfrmrs in UK, & my coil project...

Some people have asked for more details in these custom jobs - 103GBP
works out about 165USD, i think. I know that's a bit pricey but I wanted
good quality. They are just bare cores with tags for input and output
and mounting brackets. Since I will be getting hold of a few gallons of
oil for my home-made poly caps (I am thinking of a vertical stacked
plate design - I have bought 3 plastic boxes about 1'8"x1'x10" for them
at Woolworths - only £4.99 the set!!!) I am going to be using this to
fill them.

Still looking for some old units to start testing with, though. I am
going to have another run through the Yellow Pages. I went down to the
plumbers today as well, and picked up about 50 feet of 8mm dia copper
tubing. I hope this will be enough for the primary on my 6" coil!

I am having problems though finding any decent poly for the caps. I
bought 12' by 12' sheet for an extortionate £7.99 (about 13USD,
methinks) and even though it is marked 'heavy duty' is still seems too
thin. It is labelled as "500 Guage" - what on earth does this mean?? I
will try the builder's yard later, maybe they can do better. I still
also need some plexiglass for the primary support, I know someone at the
Royal College of Art, maybe they can get this for me.

I had an intersesting idea about winding a secondary... I thought I
could make a temporary 6inch card former, wrap it in polythene, then
wind the coil on top of this. I will then dope the coil with plenty of
varnish, and slip out the card centre. I will then make a support that
will hold up the top and bottom and support the toroid (not made yet) -
perhaps just a small 1 inch tube with rings attached at top and
bottom... Does this sound like a good idea?

This will be my first coil - but I've read about 300 pages of stuff so
far, Richard Quick's stuff most of all - hoping for some great streamers
- I found a tesla survey somewhere where someone with a similar size
coil to mine had achieved over 65 inch sparks! Fingers crossed!
