Hi,
I was playing with my new little tesla coil last night and i noticed
something. IT'S WIMPY!! I have a helical primary of twelve turns
tappeded at 12. My secondary is 1.5 in. treated pvc wound with #22 wire
about 6 in. my topload is a 1.75 x .5 in rc plane tire. 1 root beer bottle
cap calculated to be about .0003 uF. 12/30 NST. My spark gap is a little
erector set motor. I don't know the bps. I also raised the secondary
about 4 inches because there were some sparks from the middle of the
secondary to the top turn of the primary. Out of this set up i get alot of
corona, no primary strikes which is good, i can get 4 in streamers to a
grounded rod.
I had more bottle capacitors and for some reason when i put all 8 in their
they make weird popping sounds and i can see sparks from the inside. One
of them the glass actually cracked and had to be thrown away. Another two
were acting kind of strange so i took them out and checked them out and
they appear to be fine. I have each bottle wrapped in aluminum tape at the
bottom. On the bottom of my enclosure I put a piece of aluminum foil. I
put in canola oil?, and motor oil which i think may be the problem. With
just the canola oil their were what looked like mini branch lightning
coming of the aluminum tape into the oil. It also started to bubble. When
i was running it last night thought the one bottle i was using didn't seem
to have any problems.
Thanks
Jeremiah
