I've set the safety gaps (in accordance to the advice of Terry) so 
that they just do not fire when only the bare NST with nothing else 
is put across it at full voltage. After kickbacks firing stops 
immediately and we (the NST and me) are satisfied  :-)

The safety gaps of course.

This is not a problem unless you are using an ancient thing with a 
wooden handle and fedthrough blade.
