i can't be sure on this, but the one thing that comes to mind is the
fact that a veriac is an auto-transformer. this means that the primary
and secondary windings are on the same form and wrapped with the same
wire. as an inductor is not actually designed to step up or down the
voltage, there might be something in the apparent two windings in the
veriac.
