Re: 25kVA neon transformer



All:
	These Bombarder transformers are just like "pig"
transformers or instrument transformers, no internal
shunts, no internal limiters.  The limiter typically
used for a bombarder transformer is external and is
usually inductive, although earlier versions actually
had a movable section of the core that could be
mechanically moved in and out to change the current.

These transformers have to be hefty because they are used
to getter (to burn away if you will) the contaminate gases
within the tube and electrodes.  Given that a typical Neon
tube can take 500 to 700 watts under normal operating
conditions, it isn't surprising that they would need many
KW to perform this operation.

Sometimes the tubes fail during the bombard process, and
sparks are likely to fly!  I read one article that
recommended putting a jacobs ladder in place of all the
static safety gaps since the safety gap would fail after
a while, but the jacobs ladder would just keep on going.
