Fucian,
   Congratulations on the first light.  6 inch sparks are not bad for your 
first coil.  You asked for advice to improve the output, but you know the 
answer probably already.  First you need to make a better gap, as you said.  
You could make the Richard Quick style gap.  Also, you need to get a better 
primary cap.  Salt water caps work, but rob some of the energy from your 
system and at 270VA, you can't afford many losses like that.  Why not make 
the infamous MMC type cap.  They are reasonably affordable.
