Terry's remote tuning idea...

TCML,

A while back, Terry Fritz helped me install our Model 9J Tesla coil
into the PepsiCenter arena in Denver. The Model 9J operates in both
rightside up and upside down configurations. Because Fsec is different
for different installations, Terry suggested I ease installation by
installing
a device that would raise or lower the toroid to change Fsec.

After running the Model 9J for several months, I've decided that the
toroid is much too low for rightside up operation. I am in the process of
machining an aluminum disk and aluminum standoffs to raise the
toroid and I remembered Terry's suggestion.

The disk (23" dia.) will be mounted ~6" above the secondary (20" dia.)
using aluminum standoffs and will act as a corona shield and mounting
platform. The toroid will be mounted ~6" above the disk using aluminum
standoffs. The disk "could" be used to mount a motorized lifting
mechanism for the toroid thereby facilitating Terry's idea.

Question: The 9J is a big coil (shipping weight 1,900 lbs.) and difficult to
haul out and test. Does anybody with experience raising and lowering
toroids have an idea as to the Fsec shift I can expect? I'll be able to test
toroid height vs. Fsec in a few months. For now, I'm just looking for
a reasonable ballpark.
