Hmmm, must be a static gap... My guess is it is a combination of things....

Low charging current with a large cap size and wide spacing requiring
successive half cycles to charge the
cap voltage to the breakover condition. To charge faster (and fire at a
faster bps) fix one or more of the
above.

I use a 2 inch soft copper strap (drilled two holes at each end for
fastener) shaped around the primary. The
end holes come together on the bottom of the primary where I make
connection. It can be loosened and slid
within the runner area. Obvisously, it must be removed and reinstalled if
needed to go over a runner. It lyes
flat to the surface of the primary and contacts the entire surface. Never
had a problem with this setup.
However, drilled hole positioning is important as you want the strap to
tighten around the primary wire. If
you do this, you'll see what I mean.
