It is like ringing a bell.

You give it a tap and it rings very loudly. So you
sort of give the Tesla Coil a "tap" of electricity and
it rings electrically and instead of sound you get
very high voltage.

The clapper of a bell by itself makes almost no noise
if you just wack it against the ground, even the huge
clapper in a church bell. You smack it against the
bell, though, and it can be deafening.

Just as the "smack" of electricity you give a Tesla
coil, by itself is nothing very remarkable, when
applied to the Tesla coil it "rings" strongly and
gives out huge sparks.

How's that?
