Hi Tim,
The answer to your question is AC  in and out but the pure sine wave will be 
changed.
This is very easy to see if you can get hold of even a cheap oscilloscope.
Connect the capacitor in series with a resistance. connect the scope across 
the resistance and drive the circuit with any sort of audio signal generator. 
I have even used 
a DC source and a motor driven switch. The circuit is a simple T=RC 
circuit. You can vary the frequency and see the effect  on the wave shaping.
This effect is described in any EE or RE text. Schaums is also good.
