Signal transmission through the Earth is used in many systems today.
The lower the frequency, the better waves propagate trough the Earth.
Not practical for high data rates, however, because of the low carrier
frequency. Marconi made the first signal transmission across the
Atlantic in 1901 with a transmitter that essentially was a high-power
Tesla transformer connected to a huge antenna.
The radio systems studied by Tesla were in no aspect different from
what Marconi and others were studying by that time.
