NST question

Original poster: "Jake Draper by way of Terry Fritz <twftesla-at-qwest-dot-net>" <cybermecium2-at-home-dot-com>

Hi, I've heard a lot about people getting free NSTs from thier local sign
shops, so I decided to try it myself, I asked the guy behind the counter if
they had any older used transformers and that I was building a Tesla Coil and
he went in the back and I walked out with an Actown 9/30 for free! Now that I
have my long-awaited NST, I want to use it on my 4X24 coil (which hasn't been
wound yet, still need some magnet wire) and I want to know if there is any
simple protective procedures that I can do to make this thing last as long as
possible. I would be really bummed if I fired up my coil and in 2 seconds the
NST is dead. I know there are safety gaps and things like that but I don't know
how to set them up so anybody that knows how to extend the life of an NST,
please help! Thanks,
    -Jake D.
