Have you tuned the coil yet?I found with my coils, the number one thing is 
tuning it.Second is the spark gap.Third is the ground and last comes the 
capacitor and power.I built my first coil at age 14.It threw 1in sparks 
easily and was pretty small and crappy.It used a 1250volt 3.5ma he-ne laser 
PSU!The cap was a salt water type.Now that im almost 18 I have a coil that 
will throw only 15in sparks with a 15kv/30ma NST.I need a better cap.And the 
gap could use work.Try improving your gap.That increased my output by about 
4-5in!And tune it!Now i get 1in arcs without tuning and find"the spot" and 
get 15in.
