Hi Bill 

I have a suggestion for you use your old static gap as safety
gap. Open it as wide as it's safe to open it and run your rotary
if something go wrong the static gap will conduct and save your
NST and caps.

Any way I always use a safety gap and may be I'm lucky but I
never blow a transfo. or a cap.

My next power supply will be a DC one and the challenge will be
to design a safety gap that will not burn my diode or storage cap
if it fire.
