Greg,

I've heard of some folks having some success of this sort.
I suppose that if one side of the tank is grounded, then this
may help some to protect the motor.  Still, I'm surprised 
these set-ups last as well as they do.  One could use
a 120V - 120V HV isolation transformer to power the motor
I suppose, but it still all seems treacherous to me.  I always
use an insulated rotor.
