Subject: shaded pole motors

Hi All,
    Does anyone know if the small shaded pole? motors used on such
things as the fans  in microwave ovens ect are synchronous? I want to
experiment with trying to trigger a  static gap from a small rotary, as
well as making a rotary rectifier. I have a 500 watt bench grinder I
could modify, but it is a bit big for what I want.
