If you can get hold of some Strontium - 90 (a fantastic beta emitter) then
you can stick it to your coil and get a long beam of light coulered plasma,
even at low voltages or where your topload is too large for breakouts. (How
did you ionise the air in your exps?)

Ive never tried that... might give it a go. I used 18 NIB magnets from
assorted hard disks that were screwed around a piece of sewer pipe. The
plasma snake shot straight down the middle of the pipe for about two
seconds, then the magnets caught fire. They burn like magnesium and smell
like a cow's derriere!
