IN general, transformers that work at 60 Hz will work at 400 Hz, with the following changes:

Increased core losses, particularly if the laminations are thick.
A really annoying whine (60 Hz just gives you a nice hum, 400 Hz, or the second harmonic, 800 Hz, is very very audible).
Increased voltage drop (poorer regulation, said a different way) due to leakage inductance (because the reactance is 7 times greater).

The current regulator in the bombarder (usually a variable inductor of some sort) will be most affected by the higher frequency, since its adjustment range is now 7 times greater.
