yes, use various salts dissolved in water and sprayed onto the electrodes,
then let it dry.  Strontium chloride or nitrate for bright red, sodium
chloride (salt) for bright yellow, barium nitrate or chloride for green,
calcium salts give you orange.  a good bright blue is very tough to get.

This also works on the toroid top load, by the way, but not as well (I think
the sparks off the top load aren't as hot, and don't vaporize as much of the
ionic salt).
