The probe has an output voltage of 0 to 40 volts.  1 volt on the meter =
1000 real volts

40,000V peak

It's kind of old but if it looks in good condtion it's probably fine.  If
your going to measure the output of a pole pig or something.  "I" would set
the meter up and get back.  No reason to be holding on to it in those
situations.
