Ted,

I almost always make my torids like that.  My center peices are mounted so 
that they are sitting about 1" depth into the toroid.  They are by no means 
centered verticaly.   Kinda like this:

I hope this comes out right :\
either way, i mount the center plate very close to the bottom of the toroid.
