I was a little pressed for time when I wrote the above.  The diagram that I
remember, had a waveguide tube that rose verticaly with a spherical topload
cavity.  It looked like a Van De Graff, only without the guts.  I think the
assembly was 5-6' tall and diameter was 12".  The artical was sometime in
the early 90s.
