Tesla was fascinated with spiral coils.  Look at all his patents.  There is no
mistake that the vast majority are spiral.
 
There is a great picture of Tesla sitting in front of a large spiral coil that
is quite famous.  It's on the cover of Marc Seifer's Tesla biography,
"Wizard".  Tesla enegmatically posed for the picture and is said to have
offered it to the world as a riddle to it's meaning and significance.  Most of
his demonstrations to friends such as Samuel Clemens involved his spiral coils.
