Malcolm -

By saying that Tesla coil design is empirical I did not mean that it was not
possible to design and build a coil now without knowing much of how it would
perform. What I meant was that because Tesla coil design is empirical we
need more building and testing and a book on how to do the testing properly.
The book should also contain actual test results which would be updated
periodically, possibly via the List.

Would I be correct in thinking that by saying "design is empirical",
you are saying that no-one who designs and then builds a coil has any
idea what it will do prior to operating it? If so, I daresay there
are a few of us who can do a little better than that ;)
