If you do what you state below, you will only get several hundred volts out
of the ignition coil and it will not be able to trigger a gap.  What makes
the ignition coil produce the high voltage pulses is the sudden collapse of
the magnetic field when contacts open or a power transistor turns off after
the current has built up to 5 amps or so.  Or, in the case of a dimmer with
cap in series, a capacitor charged to over a hundred volts is suddenly
discharged through the coil.
