Variac and Ballast

After I got my 4 MOT's phased I thought that it might be beneficial to have
them hooked up so the input voltage is 240v instead of 120v. I can simply
increase the 120v mains to 240v with my variac. This way I could use the supply
if I ever got a 240v outlet installed. My variac is only rated for 20A output
so if I stepped down the line voltage to 120 I'd be limited to the same power
as my current mains. So anyway since this will be the first time I'm using a
variac with a TC am I correct in my assumption that the ballast needs to be on
the output side of the variac?
