  That was my exact plan with a giant 60KV Xray transformer. The problem
came about when I lifted
the midpoint connection. This connection is not insulated for full floating
secondaries - even in
oil-.You're looking at 15-20KV PER secondary, as opposed to half that for
the midpoint grounded.
  Mine sure looked looked there was plenty of insulation, much more than an
NST, but the
additional current made the arc over problem that much worse.
  I would suggest that you at least test it initially with the secs.
connected together, then go
from there. Once mine started to arc over, I tried and tried but could not
prevent it from
continuing. Had to rewind it.
  BTW mine was coated with shellac, so I soaked it for a week in denatured
alcohol. that loosened
it up enough to peel the layers off in a controlled way.
