Consider making some RF "hash chokes".  They can be constructed by winding
approx. 75 turns of #12 AWG on a 2" ID PVC tube.  Then, fill the tube with
as many 1/4 x 7 inch long bolts as you can --- after cutting the head off
the bolt to make it into an iron rod.

They clip and reduce some transients before they do any damage in the power
circuit or on the variac brushes.  It's best to have them right at the point
where the power leaves your control cabinet and then use some varisters
between each choke and ground just before the power enters the variac to
clip any remaining "nasties".

Some dual variacs have paralleling chokes to equalize current distribution
but they are not necessary if your loads are reasonably balanced.  We always
strip them off and never use them.
