Hi Dan
If I understand your question the answer is designs that do not run the
current in , around a ring then out the other electrode are usually designed
so that the current passes from a fixed electrode , thru the rotating
electrode then out the other side of that same rotating electrode. Many pix
on the Tesla sites of designs like this.
