Hi, i would use the 4.5 inch tube with #28 wire for 24 inches, will give you
almost 6:1 and i have had good luck with that size with 3.5 inch tube as
well. i have a short coil 18 inches wound with #28 also and it performs
almost as well as the longer coil. i use 2 frying pans for the first toroid
and the bottom pan has angled side and the top looks just like a toroid. it
seems to keep the sparks up off the primary and with the flat strap primary
the secondary winding is flush to the primary. i have not had any trouble
with racing sparks if its tuned. cul brian f.
