Hi Jeff,

J = 1/2 x C x V^2

Where:

J is the energy in Joules
C is the capacitance in Farads
V is the voltage in volts

So a 50nF cap charged to 5000 volts works out to:

1/2 x 50e-9 x 5000 = 0.625 Joules
