"Yes, remove the resistors. You don't need them."

This might not be the best advice for someone just bringing their first coil
to life.

Granted, the bleeder resistors are not "necessary" for the coil to operate.

However, everyone on this list who is posting "advice" should try to
emphasize SAFETY at every possible opportunity. Every piece of commercial
(and military) equipment that has a power supply operating in excess of a
few kV will have some sort of "safe-ing" circuit to bleed charged caps to a
safe voltage before any access panel can be opened. Many years of experience
with high voltage "accidents" has made this a worldwide standard practice,
absolutely mandatory for any HV circuit design.

I have measured voltages in excess of 10kV on large MMC's that were not
equipped with bleeder resistors. Even with the ends of the MMC "shorted" by
the power supply transformer, the caps in the middle of the string will hold
a very substantial charge if they are not all tied together with bleeders.
It just depends what the voltage across the string was at the time the power
was cut.

Help the newer guys think "safety" in everything they do.

Regards,
Scott Hanson
