I built a similar coil a few years ago to more-or-less duplicate that
machine and see the effects shown in the photo. The original had a
core with primary wound over it, then two secondaries in a bipolar
arrangement as you say. For the secondaries, I used 500g solder reels
wound to the brim with PVC covered hookup wire in such a way that the
centre connection between the two coils came from the bottom of each
reel. The core in mine was a single large ferrite rod with the
primary wound over it. I used a conventional gap system rather than
the buzzer system in the original. The whole thing was immersed in an
acrylic box filled with oil (which slowly seeped out of the joints).
I sort of built it in the same spirit of duplication as I did with
the CS magnifier model.
      Corona was spraying off everything connected to the secondary
terminals and while it was interesting to see the effects, it was
somewhat mundane compared with lightning bolts from a decent 1/4 wave
device. The Q was rather poor and there were a lot of resonances
exhibited.
