Dan,

A few years back, a tesla list member posted on building a TC coil that did
not have a primary tank capacitor at all.  It had a similar design to
yours, but no capacitor.  This would eliminate the very HV cap requirement.
Probably be a real good idea to protect the HV secondary though.
